PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Africa will soon be emblazoned on the pages of the passports of nine Philadelphia children who are trainees in the KB + Mo Bamba Education Abroad Program. The group prepares to embark on a trip to the Ivory Coast.

In August, the nine Philadelphia students, from different parts of the city, will spend nine days alongside nine classmates from the Ivory Coast, exploring the global supply chain.

Mayor Cherelle Parker shared her insight from her own transformative trip to West Africa earlier in her life.

“When you have access to this opportunity, it’s a betrayal not to share it with other people who can’t see what you see,” he said.

Students will witness firsthand the journey of products, such as rubber, that originate from African trees and culminate in American-made Michelin tires.

Bryce Boynton, 17, has been involved with the KB Foundation since he was 14 years old. He is excited to see and experience the supply chain from start to finish.

“I didn’t know the process of harvesting (rubber) or how it was cleaned and turned into usable material,” Boynton said.

“The most important thing is to give him leadership skills and be able to see something outside of himself and what he’s normally used to seeing,” Boynton’s mother said.

The KB Foundation is a mentoring program that collaborates with 76ers center Mo Bamba, whose family comes from the Ivory Coast.

They also partner with West Africa’s largest agribusiness company, SIFCA, for the cultural and educational exchange experience.

“It really opens up (the trainees’) horizon on how it all works,” said Justin Fishman, vice president of programming at the KB Foundation. “(They ask) How can I be a part of this and where are the opportunities?”

“There is also an important human aspect. They can meet the communities near the plantations and see the conditions that are sometimes not so easy,” said Henriette Gomis-Billon, director of communications at the SIFCA Foundation.
