No. 20 Cal tops Fresno State

FRESNO, California – Tatum Anzaldo recorded her 200th career hit and set a career-high with four base hits to lead the No. 20 California softball team past Fresno State on Wednesday at Margie Wright Diamond.

Hayley Archer put a zero on the scoreboard in 6.2 innings of relief and acacia anders broke through with a two-run homer in the sixth to lead the Golden Bears (30-12). Keahilele Mattson was 2-for-3 with two RBIs for the Bulldogs (28-14).

Cal struck first before most of the fans were in their seats. Lagi Quiroga he crushed the second pitch of the game well into the left field grass for his 11th long ball of the year. With a 1-0 lead heading into the home half, the Bulldogs battled back.

Consecutive one-out singles followed by a 2-run double gave Fresno State the lead against Cal’s starter Randi Roelling. Another single and a walk loaded the bases as the Bears headed to Hayley Archerwho got an RBI ground ball and a fly ball to end the frame with the score 3-1, Bulldogs.

Cal got within a run in the third when Anders drove in Anzaldo with a liner up the middle to make the score 3-2 as Archer settled in with the game in the fourth. The senior from Columbus, New Jersey, struck out three straight Bulldogs while working two singles in the middle innings.

Archer put up his fourth consecutive shutout in the fifth and Cal took advantage in the top of the sixth. Anzaldo recorded his third hit of the night and Anders followed with a 2-run bomb to right field to give Cal a 4-3 lead.

The Bulldogs got two runners in the sixth, but Archer used a groundout to end the threat and retired Fresno State in order in the seventh for his eighth win of the year.

Cal returns to Pac-12 play with a three-game series beginning Friday at Levine-Fricke Field against No. 8 Washington.
