Boone – Janice Lee Schurman Wahab, 71, passed away Sunday morning, April 14, at Glenbridge Health and Rehab in Boone, North Carolina.

She was born May 5, 1952 in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada, daughter of the late Jack and Mary Schurman. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Harry Leigh “Bud” Wahab, Jr., and her aunt, Joan D’Orazio.

As he passed and arrived in Heaven, he fell gently into the arms of his beloved Bud, whom he adored with every fiber of his being and in whose eyes he could not wait to lose himself again.

Janice’s family moved to Florida and eventually settled in Raleigh, North Carolina, where she worked at the State Department of Public Instruction in her youth before meeting her future husband on a blind date. She immediately ran to her house to tell her mother that she was in love with her; just six months later, she and Bud were married. They moved to Swan Quarter, North Carolina and later to Scranton, North Carolina, where she would eventually work at the Hyde County Health Department as an office manager and then at Hyde County Schools as a testing administrator.

He is survived by his son, John Cole Wahab; sister Lynda Harris and her husband, CM Harris, their three daughters, Anna Hovancik, Melanie Coffey and Meghan Mixon and their husbands, Dan Hovancik, Shane Coffey and Garrett Mixon, their combined 13 children, whom she loved with all her heart, brother. his father-in-law George Wahab and his wife Mary Ellen Wahab, his daughter Brett Hargis and her husband Mike, and his cousin Nancy Preston and her daughter Jenn Preston.

Janice loved the beach, and Ocracoke Island and its banker ponies held special places in her heart. She loved her family and her friends passionately and, although her various illnesses constantly tested the resolve of her body, her gentle heart and kind soul never wavered.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the nonprofit Outer Banks Forever’s “Adopt a Pony” program (https://obxforever.org/adoptapony/). Individual ponies can be adopted on Ocracoke Island or donations can be made that benefit the herd as a whole.
