MOUNT PLEASANT – Negaunee’s Emily Paupore was named Female Athlete of the Year at Central Michigan University during Monday’s year-end awards ceremony on campus.

A junior on the Chippewas women’s track and cross country teams, the 2020 Negaunee High School graduate joined CMU wrestler Alex Cramer, who was named Male Athlete of the Year, as top honorees among more than 400 student-athletes at the Maroon & Gold Gala held at McGuirk Arena.

Paupore’s mother, Vickie Paupore,

mentioned that her daughter was also named to CMU Track and Field’s Moment of the Year award for being the first runner in school history to win the Mid-American Conference women’s cross country championship.

Among her honors was being named First Team All-MAC during the winter indoor season after winning the 5,000-meter title at the conference championships on Feb. 23 in 16 minutes, 16.81 seconds, a career-best time. the conference season. She also was sixth in the 3,000.

Also during the indoor season, he set CMU records in the mile, 3,000 and as part of the distance medley relay. The outdoor track team that Emily Paupore is also a member of began its season in late March.

In cross country last fall, Paupore finished 20th out of 231 runners in 20:57.6 for six kilometers at the NCAA Division I Great Lakes Regional Championships in Madison, Wisconsin, CMU’s best finish since 2014 in the run-up to the national finals.

She had already won the MAC competition before that and also set the Central 5K record.

After the season ended, she was named All-Academic by the USA Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, with a 3.95 cumulative grade point average in elementary education.
