On March 26, Calvin “CJ” Jackson Jr. was caught in the crossfire of a shooting while playing outside an apartment complex.

HOUSTON – A large community barbecue and fish fry was held for Calvin “CJ” Jackson Jr. on Friday, hoping to raise enough money to cover his medical bills.

“…I know people care, but seeing it makes the feeling even better and bigger,” said CJ’s mother, Deshaydarion Davis Jackson.

On March 26, the 10-year-old boy was caught in the crossfire of a shooting while playing outside an apartment complex near Tidwell Road and CE King Parkway in northeast Houston. He remains in the hospital and continues to fight for his life.

“One of the bullets grazed his spinal cord and tore off part of the bone, so he had no feeling in his right leg,” Riston said. “He can’t walk with that right leg. He has to be helped to walk with that right leg.”

Step by step is how the brave 10-year-old spends his days recovering after having to undergo another surgery just two days ago.

“…to drain the fluid from his lungs, and they had to drain the fluid from his pelvis and they had to aspirate his liver,” Jackson said.

The last three and a half weeks have been exhausting for CJ’s family, but the community fish offered them a small escape.

“Every time I hear gunshots, it brings back memories of the night my grandson was shot,” Riston said.

While it has been a lot for those who love CJ, they are finding strength through faith, knowing that love and time heals all.

“Hey, we know God got us, we’re covered in the blood of Jesus, so we know he’ll walk again,” Riston said.

The person who shot CJ has not yet been captured. Anyone with information about the shooter is asked to call the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

The family has created a GoFundMe to help cover CJ’s medical expenses.
