A driver who fled a traffic stop in Worcester allegedly crashed into a state trooper’s vehicle before driving the wrong way on the Massachusetts Turnpike.

State police say a 21-year-old Shrewsbury man, whose name was not released, is believed to have been driving a black Chevrolet Cruze when he walked away from a Worcester police officer Friday morning. Moments later, around 10:15 a.m., a police officer spotted the vehicle at the Route 20 connector in Millbury.

The officer, who was driving a 2017 Ford F250 pickup truck, turned on his lights and siren, police said. The driver did not stop and entered Interstate 90.

“While being pursued, the suspect abruptly applied the brakes, swerved the vehicle and intentionally struck the trooper’s cruiser,” a state police spokesperson said in a statement.

The man allegedly continued west on the east side of the road.

More police and the Massachusetts State Police Air Wing helicopter searched, but did not find the driver.

According to police, there are five active warrants, including two felonies and three misdemeanors, against the driver. His license and the registration of his vehicle are suspended.

The police officer rejected the medical condition. Her cruiser suffered minor damage.
